Why is HP DL580 G7 server very slow on ubuntu server/desktop, centos and windows server?
Resolved Locked Unanswered
Hi guys, I just bought HP DL580 G7 8SFF 4x E7-4870 40 Cores @ 2.4G 128GB RAM 4x PSU, Raid, Rails - I installed ubuntu server and mounted ubuntu desktop to give me user-interface visibilty but it is very slow to open the desktop and when it eventually loads, it takes forever for browser to load or run any process.
I have upgraded the firmware, changed some bios settings to use OS control and other tweaks tested to see if it will improve but all to no avail.
I have also install Centos, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS all behaving alike.

Please what can I do to get it working fine for ubuntu?

clearly, the spec I mentioned above should be able to get things going for me....moreso, it is still in almost mint condition

Thanks in advance for your support, suggestions and views....

Nothing wrong with your CPU I presume as the issue you are experiencing would be inevitable as you missed out basic OS and server requirements/checks before you spend your money buying DL580 G7 8SFF 4x E7-4870 40 Cores @ 2.4G 128GB RAM 4x PSU - You were probably motivated by the number of CPUs and cores embedded in this piece of hardware.
To cut the long story short - this server is not compatible with many OS such as Ubuntu server, Centos and Windows server.
You can refer to the link below for Ubuntu and HPE for hardware and OS compatibility

https://certification.ubuntu.com/server/models/?query=&vendors=HPE&release=16.04+LTS

http://h17007.www1.hpe.com/us/en/enterprise/servers/supportmatrix/ubuntu.aspx#.XGsMwLjgp9M

DL580 G7 is mostly compatible with VMWARE - if you are able to install VMWARE, then you can mount Ubuntu Server if you want. Hence, VMWARE would be managing your ubuntu OS and you can use the vmware to allocate the number of cores or resources you would like to assign to your ubuntu server operations.
I personally do not like this type of dependent operations and moreso - some vmware version requires payment subscription

Always check if the server hardware you want to buy is compatible with the OS you want to use before you make a purchase.

I hope this helps and will help others
